This year I started spinning again, and I am feeling very addicted to the process. I wanted to create a knitting pattern that highlights some of my handspun yarns, and thus "Highlights Baby Hat" was born! This is a simple rolled brim stockinette baby hat with eyelets to allow you to thread another featured yarn/ribbon through the brim. I hope that you enjoy this cute simple pattern.
Materials
- 60 yards sport weight yarn. The yarn that I used in this project is a thick and thin single ply yarn (~12 dpi) that I spun myself. I would recommend that you use a thick/thin yarn for this project to get a similar effect. Lots of spinners sell their hand spun yarns on Etsy.
- 5 - size 5 double pointed knitting needles.
- 1 yard bulky hand spun yarn or pretty ribbon
- Yarn needle for weaving in loose ends.
- Gauge: 19 sts/ 4"; 7 rows/inch.
- Finished size: Newborn (13" circumference, 6" tall with rolled brim, 6.5" tall with brim blocked flat.)
The Pattern
- Cast on 60 sts across 4 double pointed needles (15 sts per needle). Join to knit in the round
- Knit 4 rounds even
- Eyelet Round: *K1, YO, K2tog* repeat from * across the round. (60 sts)
- Knit 35 rounds or until the hat measures 5.75" from the cast on edge (5" from the eyelet round.)
- Begin Decreases for the crown: *K4, K2tog* repeat from *across (50 sts)
- K across
- *K3, K2tog* repeat from *across (40 sts)
- K across
- *K2, K2tog* repeat from *across (30 sts)
- K across
- *K1, K2tog* repeat from *across (20 sts)
- K across
- K2tog across (10 sts)
- K2tog across (5 sts)
- Break yarn, pull through the remaining 5 stitches. Weave in loose ends.
- Take your yard of bulky hand spun and starting with the tail on the outside of the hat weave through the eyelets. Tie into a bow.
If you don't have hand spun yarn to use for the bow, don't despair! You can create a crochet chain, braid some yarns or find some fun novelty ribbon.
