A Newborn Mickey Hat for a Disney Loving Family

Lucky's best friend, Dede, is the perfect model for newborn sized hats.
Some friends are pregnant with their second son!  They are a Disney loving family and I know that they have embroidered Mickey hats on the wall of their home.  What newborn hat could be cuter than a little crochet Mickey Mouse hat?  I used KnitPicks Wool of the Andes worsted yarn in Coal (18 g, 40 yards), Red (5 g, 11 yards), and white (2 g, 5 yards) and a size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook for this project.

I'm always worried about the sizing of newborn hats.  I realized that for this hat, it doesn't really matter if it fits above the ears because it would look more like a Mickey Mouse Beanie if it did! Instead of adding any extra rows I'm going to go ahead and just stop when the pattern says to stop. The hat measured ~3.25" long when I was done with the 9 black rounds.

Before staring this project I posted on the ChemKnits Facebook page, "Three cheers for another stashbusting project. Three boos for knowing you will need to re-order these yarns because they are useful to have in your stash."  Somehow so many of my projects end up using white, black and red yarn!  I always try to keep Wool of the Andes in these colors in my stash because time and time again I want to make something with them.  Thankfully, I did not have enough Red yarn for the next Richter Stocking I will have to make this year so I will need to order more of that anyway.  This project used KnitPicks Wool of the Andes yarn in Coal (black), Red and White for the buttons.

For the buttons I did a magic circle with 10 hdc around and then joined.  I fastened off and stitched these buttons to the front of the hat.

The final hat measures 5" deep x 6" wide.

The only real concern I have about this project is that the family lives in California and the baby is due in August.  It is a bit warm for a wool hat but I hope that they will appreciate the gesture nevertheless.  Newborn hats make great outfits for dolls and stuffed animals after they're outgrown, so it is a gift that can last slightly beyond one picture.  There is no doubt that this is an ADORABLE hat!
