Dinosaur Footprint Birthday Banner

When my little "Rowdy" dinosaur tuned one year old last January, I needed to create a splash for his party.  I put a lot of work into his brother's first birthday party and I wanted Rowdy to be able to look back and feel like I did a lot for him, too.  A central part of any birthday party is the "Happy Birthday" banner.  Keith and I created this amazing rainbow dinosaur footprint birthday banner for Rowdy's party and we wanted to share the free printable with you today.

Download the FREE Rainbow Dinosaur Footprint Birthday Banner PDF (via Google Drive) so you can add some fun rainbow footprints to your own party.  The PDF also includes some blank footprints in each of the 5 colors so you can add a name or change the message on the banner.

The FREE Rainbow Dinosaur Footprint Birthday Banner PDF

For Rowdy's party, we printed one footprint per page.  The banner took up a whole wall!  I taped each footprint individually to the crepe paper wall I had set up.  Alternatively, you could attach them to some string and then hang them on wall.  For a smaller banner, you can print the footprints 2/page.

I used a free Jurassic Park font for the letters.  I don't think that anyone noticed the font at the party, but I liked knowing that there was an additional dinosaur connection.  The letters themselves are very narrow and so we used 500 pt font to get them to fill the footprints nicely.

Slowly I'm getting through all of the DIY projects I did for Rowdy's birthday party.  (Very slowly, he is almost 20 months old!) I thought I was almost done but then I keep discovering more projects!  Make sure you check out my Dinosaur First Birthday Party Pinterest Board to see more of my inspiration.

End of Year Teacher Thank You Craft from the Whole Class

At the beginning of the last school year, I signed up to help with the end of year thank you craft for the teachers at my son's preschool.  I love doing crafts, surely I could come up with something fun to do with almost no budget.  We wanted to do something that would allow participation from the kids but also could be useful for the teachers.  The previous year, we made the teachers custom tote bags.  We ironed on a class photo with a sentence from each student "I love XX because..."  The teachers loved the bags, but I knew that I would need to come up with a new idea for this year.

I polled my friends who are elementary and preschool teachers, and they all had similar responses.  They all said that they appreciated cards and thank you notes more than any other gift.  They didn't need more mugs or picture frames to clutter their homes, but cards and pictures from students were things that they held onto.

The sample folder I made to share with other parents.
Lucky's preschool has 5 classes with over 22 teachers, specialists, administrators and staff.  We wanted a project that would be simple to execute, inexpensive (so most of the money we collect can go to gift cards for the teachers), useful (not clutter),  and something the kids can participate in.  Simple, right?

When I came across a Thank You Flower Card, I knew that I found a winning idea.  We would let all of the kids decorate petals for their teachers, and then assemble them together onto simple file folders.  I always need more folders and personalized ones would be super fun and potentially useful.  Decorating the petals didn't take very long, and I quickly whipped up a sample to share with the parents.  I knew that if I needed to, I would be able to decorate all of them myself.

Materials

For the first petals, I folded a piece of construction paper in half and free cut a petal like shape.  This length was a bit too long for the file folder, so I trimmed down the edges to make the petals a bit shorter.   I used my hole punch to make a hole in the edge of the petals and secured them to the folder just about where the pocket ended.

I planned to send home 5 petals with each student.  Most classrooms had 3-4 teachers and there were multiple specialists. The teachers helped distribute the petals in the kids backpacks.  Since I knew that some might get lost on the way home, we sent a petal template in an email to the parents.  This way, parents could create their own petals out of whatever they wanted.

Since I already did the hard work of figuring out the petal size, here is a printable template of the flower petals.  This is the exact template that I emailed the parents of the preschool.

When I was preparing to distribute the petals, I realized that I needed to make enough to send 5 petals to about 60 students.  I didn't want to count the petals as I was counting.  I weighed 25 petals and then used that to calculate the total weight of petals I would need for this project.  It worked great!  I stuffed the petals plus a simple instruction sheet into envelopes to go home with the kids.

End of Year Teacher Appreciation Craft Instructions (This is what we sent home with the envelopes.  A longer explanation was sent to the parents via email.)

  • Please decorate one side of one petal for each of your child’s teachers. (Draw a picture, write a note, etc). Please note that we will punch a hole near the pointy end when we assemble the flowers. The finished petals should be flat so please don’t use bumpy stickers or glue. Make sure to sign your child’s name on the petal!
  • Please also write the teacher’s name on the back if their name isn’t part of the decoration.
  • Return the petals to Rebecca Brown (Lucas’s Mom - Dubim) by MONDAY JUNE 5.
  • Extra decorated petals are welcome for non-classroom teachers and staff.

While I waited for the petal submissions, I started decorating the folders for teachers.  I added their names to the top and "Thank you for helping our children grow!" on the inside pocket.

Lucky had a blast decorating petals.  He even started making petals for teachers in other classrooms!  I was nervous that we wouldn't have enough petals submissions, but the students and parents delivered.  I was able to make flowers of at least 10 petals for each of the teachers and staff we wanted to thank.  (Some of the specialists that see every student had a lot of submissions.)

Finally, we finished off these cards by adding Amazon gift cards and handwritten thank you notes from the parents into each folder.   We presented these cards to the teachers at the end of year portfolio breakfast and they were so excited!

I'm so glad that this project worked well... and now I'm already thinking about next year.  What kind of projects have you done to thank teachers?

Pumpkin Chevron Birthday Banner - FREE PRINTABLE!

Another birthday, another banner right?  Well this time the banner is BOTH a Happy Birthday and a Happy Halloween Banner!  The free pdf that you can download (via Google Drive) will say both of these celebratory phrases plus have some blank pages so you can add a name of your own.

I really liked the chevron fish birthday banner I created for Lucky's under the sea birthday party, so I wanted to use that theme but make it more appropriate for a Halloween/Birthday/Housewarming Party.  I modified the black chevron background and pumpkin silhouette and then started looking for some fun Halloween Fonts.

From top to bottom: Jackie O’Lantern, JI Pumpkins, Zombie Holocaust, Serpents, Punkinhead, LT White Fang, LCR Pumpkin Face, Ghoul, Alpha Shapes Pumpkins.  All fonts downloaded for free from www.fontspace.com.
This Halloween party I planned was supposed to have the joy of Halloween, but not necessarily be spooky and scary.  I didn't want the fonts to look like blood or something that belonged on the cover of a Stephan King novel.  I started looking for Halloween fonts in August, but when I searched again on October 1 there were suddenly more available.  In looking through the 400+ fonts available I pulled 15 before narrowing them down the ones above.  In the end, I thought that LCR Pumpkin Face would be super cute on top of a pumpkin background, but wanted to do a test to make sure it would still be readable.

I printed out a few pages at font size 225.  I also wanted to get the orange of the pumpkin just right, so Keith drew me the pumpkin silhouette in three different colors so we could pick our favorite based on the way they come out of the printer.  I like the color of the "P" pumpkin the best so that's the one that will become the focus of the sign.

I wanted to use these banners for multiple events:  Lucky's birthday party and his birthday photoshoot outside.  Whatever we use on his actual birth day can double up for his birthday party, too.

To help these many words fit in a smaller space, I printed the letters two to a sheet of paper, but you could make a much larger banner by printing one page per piece of paper.

We took the Happy Birthday portion to use the banner for Lucky's 2 year birthday photoshoot outside.  I was a little worried that the letters would be hard to read but you have no trouble seeing the Happy Birthday of the signage!  The photoshoot itself would be really easy to recreate - find a location in the late afternoon light and add a stool and a pumpkin.  Technically I did "make" the stool.  When I was 10 years old or so my grandfather and I made it was a project while I was staying with him for a week, but I think I mostly did a tiny bit of hammering.  I've held onto it all of these years and it is really fun to have Lucky use it on his birthday.

For Lucky's birthday party on Halloween we used the entire banner - Happy Birthday AND Happy Halloween.  What a fun way to celebrate!  I'll share more details about his Halloween Birthday Party in the next few months.

This banner is perfect for your kids or friends who have October birthdays, or to use for just a Halloween Party.  You can download the Pumpkin Halloween Chevron Birthday Banner through Google Docs to use at your own party.   Enjoy!

I loved the birthday photoshoot so much that I set up a little photobooth for the Halloween party.  Here is Lucky in his costume with a generic banner made with a blank chevron pumpkin and more of the LCR Pumpkin Face font pumpkins.

Monkey Chevron Birthday Banner - FREE PRINTABLE!

My best friends' baby is turning one!  Well she turned one back in April, but I was so excited for this darling baby (and her parents) that I wanted to celebrate even though I lived across the country.  The Mama mentioned that they were having a Monkey themed birthday party so I decided to make a Monkey Banner to hang in my own home to celebrate with them in spirit.

You can download the Monkey Chevron Birthday Banner PDF through Google Drive.  I used the free BANAAN font to create the lettering.  I love the design of these bananay letters!

This banner has the same basic shape as my Dr. Seuss Baby Shower Banner and the Chevron Fish Banner.  Since I was NOT the party host I printed the shapes two to a page for a smaller banner, but you could print one letter per page if you wanted a larger one.

The PDF is 18 pages long and contains all of the pages to cut out monkey faces spelling "Happy Birthday" on alternating yellow and teal chevron backgrounds.  There is a smiling monkey and blank monkey face on each color so you can customize the banner message yourself.

After you've printed out the banner, just cut along the dotted line and tape or stable the letters to some ribbon.

I used some of the blank monkey faces to create a card to send to the birthday girl.  I debated whether I should send the PDF I created directly to the parents of the birthday girl, but I didn't want to intrude on their party plans.  I know that I had put in a ton of effort to plan out ever detail for Lucky's under the sea birthday party and am not sure how I'd feel if someone else sent me a banner that I felt obligated to use.

We hung this up in our living room and took pictures and videos with it to wish the little one a happy birthday.

I hope you enjoy this free printable birthday banner!

Dr. Seuss Baby Shower Banner - FREE PRINTABLE!

My cousin is expecting her first baby, and I was super excited to go to her shower this winter.  She wanted to have a Cat in the Hat themed baby shower, and my mother-in-law asked me to help with the decorations.  I loved Lucky's Chevron Fish Birthday Banner so much that I decided to start with the same basic shape to create a Dr. Seuss Baby Shower Banner.  Here is the PDF of the Dr. Seuss Baby Shower Banner!  (PDF via Google Drive.)

In addition to the banner, I made the mama-to-be a crochet cat in the hat hat and bow tie for the little boy.  Another cousin pulled out these scarves to decorate the table.  I knit the one on the right for my FIL years ago.  I'm glad that some of my knitting contributed to the decor, too.

Each letter is a full printed page that you can cut out.  These were printed on standard printer paper, which made the light shine through in a really pretty way.  I cut out the letters and then stapled them to a ribbon to hang above the table.

The mom-to-be is Romanian, and I wanted to have a mini banner in Romanian that said "Welcome Baby."  I hope that I got the translation right! (Turns out I made a minor error when transferring the phrase to the banner but I was able to fix it with a sharpie.  Copil bun venit!) I printed these letters two to a page so I could make a mini banner for elsewhere in the party.

The banner comes ready to print "Welcome Baby" and then there are blank letters in each of the patterns so you can add your own name or own party theme.  I used a Dr. Seuss True Type Font for the letters and Dr. Seuss decals, but you can use whatever font you want. You can even change this to a birthday banner or whatever you want!

Thumbnail view of the Free Dr. Seuss Baby Shower Banner PDF!  You get the pages to spell "Welcome Baby!" plus blank designs to add your own name or message.

I wasn't sure how the colors would print out, but the shade of blue and red that we got from the printer matched the tablecloth and cake PERFECTLY!

I've really enjoyed creating these banners for Lucky's first birthday party and now my cousin's baby shower.  The general shape of the banner is the same, but I am super happy with the style.  I hope that I get the opportunity to make more in the future and share them with all of you!  I'm expecting this baby to show up any day now.  EEEE, I cannot wait for Lucky to meet his newest second cousin!

Chevron Fish Birthday Banner - FREE PRINTABLE!

I'm so happy that everyone loved Lucky's First Birthday Party!  Some people have asked about the banner that we created for the party, so I wanted to share a bit about our Happy Birthday Banner.  Plus, guess what!  We are going to share a PDF of this fish themed birthday banner so you can create your own chevron fishy banner for a birthday party.

Here on ChemKnits I like to share the process of the craft I am doing, especially when it is something that I designed.  We went through multiple iterations and tests for this banner.  We started with an ombre chevron we found online and then redrew it in colors that we wanted.

The first test had two letters to a sheet, but when we tried these out on the wall they just looked too small.  We ended up using letters that filled an entire sheet of paper.

150% increase in size
There was a reasonable amount of cutting to do after pages were printed, but I think the banner is really special and perfect for our under the sea themed birthday party.

We downloaded multiple water themed fonts to make this banner.  In the end, we settled on a font called Findet Nemo in size 350. The font was a free download and is a really simple fish theme with bold block letters.  We didn't want the font to overwhelm the banner, but wanted something that would subtly be on theme.

Fonts include Findet Nemo, Mother Whale, Touch of Nature, PWBubbles, LMS Coral Cold, and Faltura Animals

I secured the banner to the wall with little crepe paper rosette fish.  (Well I, secured them with tape, but I covered the tape with the fish so it looks like that's how it is secured.)   I turned these into fish by making little crepe paper triangle and taping that to the back of the fish.

I secured the triangle to the back of the rosette to make them look like mini fish.

What can you do with the extra chevron paper you get after printing out your banner?  I cut them into tiny fish that I used elsewhere in the party decor.

Once again, here is the link to the Fish Chevron Happy Birthday PDF! (PDF available through Google Drive.)  You have all the sheets to spell "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" plus some blank bubbles so you can add your own name to the mix.  I have included the link to the font we used previously in this post and the font size so you can print your own letters to spell a name, or else you can hand write in the name.  Enjoy!

A preview of the pages you will get in the Fish Chevron Happy Birthday PDF

I hope that this free fish chevron birthday banner will be helpful for your party.  Let me know what you think in the comments.
