Kevlar Yarn!

Talk about novelty yarn! For my birthday this year, Keith gave me some Kevlar Yarn. That's right... yarn that is made out of KEVLAR. This is the strong material that is used in bullet proof vests and more.

According to Dupont, "Needled felts of Kevlar® have excellent cut and heat resistance and offer good protection against punctures. Because of their stiffness and shedding of fibers during material handling, needled felts are rarely used as outer fabrics. They are typically used as substrate materials."

So what should I make with the Kevlar yarn? I don't have a lot of yardage, so it needs to be a small project. I also have to figure out a way to cut the yarn, since my standard craft scissors had some trouble....

  1. So doesn't one of your little knitted creatures need a bullet proof vest? Imagine the backstory on that guy....

  3. Perhaps a wee glove for your fingers? A useful item if you happen to frequently cut yourself while chopping onions.

  5. If you twist a small loop around where you want to cut the kevlar will act as a saw and cut its self quite cleanly. I have use this for making hamocks for smal animals and swing rope for bay swings in macreme! Hope this helps.....:-)

    Pot holders, perhaps?

  7. Sara, I don't have enough yardage to make pot holders. But I now know where to get more.... :)

    1. Francisco,

I spent a lot of time searching (well, making my husband search) for where he got the yarn and unfortunately he could not find the source. I'm sorry that I couldn't be more help.

  11. Most vegan yarns are relatively obvious- cotton yarns, soysilk™, linen, hemp, and many more. Now there are more unusual fibers as well- recycled plastic soda bottle fiber, Angelina, corn, bamboo Kerinpuut

  12. KEVLAR is a practical Aramid fiber with uses in lots of industries. Aramid fibers have many variants other than KEVLAR fibers i.e. Twaron fibers and many more. To find the manufacturing process and a detailed description of aramid, follow here Kevlar uses

  13. You can totally buy a twenty pound roll of it on eBay. I did! I so far crocheted a little case for my EarPods. It is strange stuff to crochet with. If you let the end go all the loops will pop out. It relaxes and becomes more pliable after washing.
